Apparently Karl Rove considers himself both Beowulf and Grendel. How strange. And to think I always thought he was the smartest of the bunch. . .

I don’t care which one Rove is– I totally want to see “Beowulf” played out amongst former and present members of the Bush administration. (Who will be Grendel’s mother????) And maybe after that, those left standing could move on to “The Battle of Maldon.” The “ofermod” theme in these Old English poems certainly suits that crowd well.
Condi probably has to be Grendel’s mother (I insist on the woman-warrior interpretation, not woman-monster). She’s the most Amazonian of the whole administration, without respect for gender. In fact I’m sure Condi could kick Angelina Jolie’s armor all around the town. (Jolie is Grendel’s mother in the upcoming film; no matter what you think of that casting, Crispin Glover is Grendel. Now, that rocks.)
I am ashamed to admit I had not read Tolkein on Beowulf and thus was unfamiliar with ofermod. Rectifying that now – it does seem like a timely concept, doesn’t it? I thank you once again for being the only person who consistenly brings me new word-gems to covet.
